BCM Network Site, Tipitina's, Helps With Recovery for Tsunami Victims
Japan - October 4-15th, 2012Welcome home, Tipitina's! This is an inspiring story about one of our network sites and their trip to Japan to help with the recovery in the form of jazz.
The Tipitina's Foundation, in partnership with the Japan Foundation and the Wonderful World Jazz Foundation, sent 16 students selected from the Foundation's Tipitina's Internship Program and the O. Perry Walker High School Marching Band to Japan from October 4-15 to take part in an international recovery exchange.
After Katrina, the Wonderful World Jazz Foundation brought instruments to Tipitina's as part of a relief effort. When the tsunami hit Japan, Tipitina's returned the favor and outfitted two of their bands and sent them to the most devastated areas.
They wanted to have the kids meet face-to-face and play together. Despite the language barriers, they spoke the same language through music and the kids knew exactly what the Japanese kids were going through.
It wasn't just for the kids, but it was inspiring and brought relief/healing to the community.
