Message from the Executive Director: Boston Marathon

Boston Marathon Attack

Dear Members of the Berklee City Music Network Community,

As you are most likely aware, a terrible attack has occurred in our city. While the losses have been horrifying, I want you to know that no Berklee students, faculty, or staff have been injured.

We all want to thank you for your many expressions of concerns and outpourings of caring which we have been receiving.

In order to help law enforcement professionals to do their jobs, we have been asked to close the college due to our proximity to yesterday's events, and for those of us who live near campus to remain at home.

As a result, our offices are closed, but City Music staff will continue to work for you remotely. In the event that you need to conduct Network business with any one of us, I am encouraging all staff to check their office voice mails, also remotely.

The State Police and National Guard are fully deployed, and the Boston Police Department is presently walking block to block, thoroughly checking people and objects.

All of our Berklee buildings are locked to outsiders, and will remain so until further notice. Additional Berklee Public Safety officers have been deployed at a variety of campus locations. There is no damage to any of our campus buildings, and all of the buildings are secured.

At last count, at least 140 people are injured, and three have died. All the injured have been transported to area hospitals. Let us all have them, and their families, in our thoughts and prayers.

Again, we want to thank you for your wonderful expressions of concern for your family here in Boston.

Yours,

J. Curtis Warner, Jr.
Associate Vice President,
Education Outreach
Executive Director, Berklee City Music
BERKLEE COLLEGE OF MUSIC

Two of our network sites were represented at the White House to celebrate Memphis Soul. An invitation from the Obamas went to three of Youth UpRising’s Music Students (Oakland, CA) and two from the Stax Music Academy (Memphis, TN). They participated in an educational workshop “Soulsville USA: the History of Memphis Soul”.

They also attended the “In Performance at the White House” soul music concert that was introduced by First Lady Michelle Obama.

Special guests in attendance were Sam Moore, Mavis Staples, Justin Timberlake, Charlie Musselwhite, and Ben Harper.

What a unique opportunity to represent East Oakland, Youth UpRising, Memphis, Stax Music Academy, and the BCM network on a national stage.

Check out the White House blog:
http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2013/04/09/first-lady-michelle-obama-hosts-student-workshop-celebrating-memphis-soul
Stax Music Academy - spotlighted on NPR's World Cafe Series

Just as we announced our return to Memphis as the host for our next BCMN conference, there was a very timely series on NPR that featured our co-host, Stax Music Academy. Please check out NPR's World Cafe's "Sense of Place" spotlight on Memphis.

As producer David Dye says, "...the places that moved me the most were the living, breathing parts of Memphis. The Stax Museum of American Soul Music is just part of The Soulsville Foundation. The Stax Academy teaches music after school, while The Soulsville Charter School prepares students for college. To see rows of kids marching from class to class, and to witness the mentoring from the staff, was uplifting. It's all about the community using the past for the future at Soulsville.

We brought the Memphis vibe back with us. You can see it on the videos and hear it on the radio show. If you have a chance to visit, take it. Eat fried Chicken at Gus', have a chopped-pork sandwich at Payne's barbecue and discover where all that great American music came from."

http://www.npr.org/2013/01/16/169506239/the-stax-music-academy-on-world-cafe?ft=1&f=142680413

CMSS Scholarship Applications due

Reminder 2/22!

Make sure that any students you nominated for a City Music Summer Scholarship (CMSS) complete the online application. The deadline for the 2013 CMSS is February 22, 2013, but timeliness is a factor considered in awarding scholarships, so your students should submit their application soon as possible. The most important step at this point is for your students to complete the online application. Please encourage your students to do so here:

http://www.berklee.edu/community/application.html

If you have any questions about the scholarship process, please contact our Recruitment and Enrollment Coordinator at berkleecitymusic@berklee.edu or 617 747-6058.

Thank you and good luck to your students!
The Long Road to Pasadena

The Roots of Music marching band not only makes music, it also makes a difference in young people's lives.

"The Roots of Music, which has grown from an idea hatched in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina to a marching band featured on a top-rated HBO show, made the long trip from New Orleans to Pasadena to perform in the Rose Parade.

'We got a call from some group called the Tournament of Roses and they said we were in the Rose Parade,' said Allison Reinhardt, Roots of Music spokeswoman. 'I dropped the phone.'

Bands spend years trying to qualify for the Rose Parade, and out of thousands of applicants each year, a few dozen earn the privilege of marching in the nationally televised New Year's Day parade. But earning a spot in the Rose Parade was only the latest little miracle for the Roots of Music, a program built from the ground up in a city almost washed off the map by a hurricane."

Roots of Music launched in May 2008. Founders Derrick Tabb and Allison Reinhardt expected 19 children to sign up the first day, but 42 children showed up in their offices. Within three weeks 90 children joined and for a time the program ran out of instruments.

Please read more about our Network site partner, Roots of Music, and their exceptional story:

http://www.pasadenastarnews.com/news/ci_22285182/new-orleans-bands-long-road-rose-bowl#ixzz2GvyP75ow

http://abclocal.go.com/kabc/video?id=8939119
